The summer after my freshman year was full of monumental changes because over the course of those three months, my mother got remarried and we moved into a new house together. While preparing for the move, I found that the most exciting box to pack was undoubtedly the cardboard box that held the entire content of my bookshelf.

When the packing began, the first book that I carefully stowed away was my copy of The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien which was gifted to me by my favorite english teacher and mentor. We read the book in class, and I absolutely fell in love with it. I couldn’t get enough of O’Brien’s writing style and proceeded to read every one of his novels. Ever since then I have been reading his books over and over again, trying to absorb his style and twist it to fit my writing interests. I love to write and I covet his ability to manipulate and combine reality and imagination while maintaining a thrilling storyline. I have been working very hard on building my writing skills as an independent story writer and reading The Things They Carried truly jumpstarted my desire to skillfully and tastefully learn from other writers.

Who knew a Dr. Seuss book would forever hold a special place in my heart, beginning to build the foundations of my mindset regarding confidence and setting life goals. Dr. Seuss illustrated the importance of perseverance and determination, and how those qualities will allow me to change the world the way only I can. By exuding a love of travel and exploration, Dr. Seuss is part of the reason that I love to visit new places and meet new people, thereby expanding my knowledge of the world and exposing myself to the millions of beautiful things around
