Joan Aiken’s fantasy story, “The third wish,” is on an dusk spring evening and Mr.Peters is driving to his house. When he gets out of his car, he hears something crying when he goes towards the noise he sees that it is a swan stuck in some reeds when he saves the swan the king of the forest gives him three wishes. Mr.Peters uses the first wish so he can get a wife, the next morning a beautiful woman appears, her name is Leita his wife. She was once a swan. Joan Aiken teaches her readers that selfishness can be hurtful , and she shows this lesson through plot twists and description. She uses plot twist in “The Third Wish” by showing that Leita does not want to be human this is a plot twist because Leita at the beginning was happy to be a human. Another way she uses plot twist is making Mr.Peter realizes that Leita started to dislike being a human this is also a plot twist because Mr.Peters wanted a wife, when Leita starts crying with her swan sister, Mr.Peters starts to realize that she is not happy. Finally, Joan Aiken shows plot twist in “The Third Wish” by Mr.Peters turning Leita back into a swan this is a plot twist because Mr.Peters wanted a wife, and When he found out she was a swan he did not want to keep Leita from her sister, so he turned her back into a swan. In the story, Leita says in her sleep,” Rhea! Rhea! I can’t understand what you say!Oh, wait for me, take me with you!” (3) Leita is having a nightmare about her sister, leaving her, and Mr.Peters then knew it was hopeless and she will never be happy as a human. So he uses his second wish, to turn her back into a swan. Another craft move she uses is description, she uses description by Mr.Peters saying, “I wish I had a wife as beautiful as the forest” he describes that he wants a wife and he wants her to be beautiful.
