The Three Battles In Beowulf

Throughout the epic poem, Beowulf fought three significant battles. Each battle greatly tested his strength, but he never failed to defeat the monsters. During the first battle, he fought Grendel who had been terrorizing Hrothgar’s kingdom due to the loud celebrations they held in the Hall. He then battled Grendel's mother who came to the kingdom to seek revenge for her son's death. His final battle, was against a dragon who was seeking revenge for someone stealing its treasure. Although each is a different fight, they share very similar characteristics.

One thing that each battle had in common was Beowulf wanting to kill the monster by himself. He was able to do so until the last battle. Here, he didn't want Wiglaf’s help, but he knew he had to accept it in order to win. All of the battles he fought for the glory. His sole purpose during the fights were to prove his strength, win, and capture fame by killing yet another monster.

He overcame impossible feats that ordinary humans couldn't possibly overcome. In the first battle, he ripped off Grendel, the powerful beats arm. This injury resulted in the death of the beast and the victory of Beowulf. In the second battle, Beowulf picked up a sword made by the giants that no ordinary man could lift, resulting in a second victory. Lastly, in the third battle, Beowulf was able to survive a blast of the dragon's fire breath, and with Wiglaf’s help, kill the dragon. In all three battles he was a successful
