In an old abandoned Harlem tenement is where the short story “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” takes place in.The story stars two main characters and old blues singer Lemon Brown, and a teenage boy Greg Ridley who desperately needs his Dad’s approval to participate as a team member on the best team in town The Scorpions. Once Lemon Brown shows the boy his treasures, it changes Greg’s point of view on certain aspects in life. Theme, characters, and setting make the story “The Treasures of Lemon Brown” come alive.

One of the main characters from the book was a fourteen year old boy Greg Ridley. “Had them bigs eyes like you. I used to call them moon eyes. Look into them and you can see anything you want.” This is Lemon Brown pointing out Greg's eye’s. Also how they connect to his son’s eyes. “Greg sat in the small, pale green kitchen chair, knowing the lecture would end in his father saying he couldn’t play ball with the Scorpions.” In the beginning of the story he doesn't really listen to his father’s lectures or care about them. Greg is a dynamic character. He goes from being bored and not listening to his Father’s lectures, to where he is understanding he is just trying to help Greg. “Greg pushed the button over the bell marked Ridley, thought of the lecture his father would give him, and smiled.” Now Greg does not completely dread his Dad’s lectures after Lemon Brown knocked some sense into the teenage boy. The next main character is Lemon Brown. “He was an old man. His back, heavily wrinkled face was surrounded by a halo of white hair and whiskers that seemed to separate his head from the layers of dirty coats piled on his smallish frames.” This is describing Lemon Brown from the first sight Greg caught of him. “Returned to the graffiti-scarred building” This is telling us that it is abandoned because it has graffiti all over it. “He entered the room, frowning at the musty smell. It was a large room that might have been someone’s parlor at one time. Squinting, Greg could see an old table on its side against one wall, what looked like a pile of rags or a torn mattress in the corner, and a couch, with one side broken, in front of the window.” Greg is basically describing what the old tenement looks like from his point of view. The musty smell also gives us information that the house is abandoned because it has been sitting there for probably months or years in the rain, wind, sun, and snow; vacant. From Greg’s description we know someone has been in there because there is a torn mattress and one side of the couch is broken and they both don’t have hands to do it themselves.
