Wednesday Wars December
“We always find it difficult to forgive our heroes for being human.” -Frances Hardinge. In the novel, “The Wednesday Wars” by Gary D. Schmidt, the protagonist is a boy named Holling Hoodhood. Holling has the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Mickey Mantle, the famous Yankee baseball player. He is ecstatic to get a baseball signed by his “hero” but unfortunately, when he goes to get it signed, he is let down. Mickey refused to sign his baseball because of the way he dressed; in full feathery leotard and starry cape draped over him. He couldn’t believe it at first, his own idol that he admired, now neglecting him? Sometimes it is difficult to believe that the people we respect are actually human and make mistakes.
