The story takes place in a dystopian world that is set in the future. During most of the book it takes place in a city that is never named and towards the end the main characters are in the Uncharted Forest. The point of view of Anthem is set through first person. The narrator is called Equality 7-2521 and the book is told through a set of diaries. The story begins with Equality 7-2521 being assigned a job as a street sweeper, which he has no choice but accept. While on the job he discovers a tunnel with technology not known to people and ends up keeping the tunnel a secret, which is illegal. One of the best parts was when you could see how Equality 7-2521 was slowly learning how messed up the society was and becoming more independent. It was also cool to read about Equality 7-2521 taking advantage of how people weren’t used to people breaking rules like how he escaped the prison because no one expected it and how he just casually talked to The Golden One when he was supposed to be working. The plot was also pretty good because it showed a progression between the characters where they were completely different at the ending of the book. The only thing that was bad about the plot was that there wasn’t much detail and I wish that it was longer and expanded some parts of the story. Ayn Rand who is known for writing the books: The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, wrote Anthem. Rand opposed collectivism—which is present in Anthem—which was being enforced in the Soviet Union where she was born. Anthem has won the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award and was nominated for a Retrospective Hugo Award for best novella in 2014.
