The Unexamined Life When Socrates was found guilty in 399 B.C. after being found guilty of corrupting the youth, he responded with a very meaningful speech in his defense. But the quote “And that the unexamined life is not worth living” is the one that stands out the most. It continued to go down in history as one of his most famous and thought provoking quotes. It’s a very deep, insightful nine-worded phrase and there’s a lot to it. When he uttered this tiny phrase, he was giving the jury very intelligent advice. He was telling the jury that he was trying to help the youth by raising awareness to them that life’s too short. Get out there and learn everything you possibly can. Question stuff. Create new questions. Take everything in. He was telling them that to not question or examine your life from that perspective like he did is to take a chance of not understanding your personal relation to everything around you. He believed that the human life was all about spiritual and personal growth. He’s saying that if you just go with everyday flow of life just like everybody else is doing, you’re one hundred percent wasting what life that you were given. He didn’t want that for anyone, much less the future generation. Another way to look at is from the view of the society as a whole. He wanted the world to be as good as it possibly could.
