The United States Government Should Legalize All Drugs
Drug use and abuse are rampant across the globe, and the United States is, therefore, no exception. The government and other interested parties have tried adopting and implementing various measures in an effort to curb the practice. None of the measures has however been able to restrict the level of drug abuse within the country as is evident through the high number of drug users in the country. It has led to questions being raised and people calling for a change of approach in the handling of drug use and abuse in the country. The United States should legalize the use of all drugs in the country, and this would benefit its citizens and also solve a long-standing problem in the process.

Corruption is a major problem for most governments and the illegalization of some drugs fuels the practice in the country. Despite the drugs being illegal, they still find their way into the US market, and this is greatly due to some law enforcement officers being corrupt. The drug business attracts a lot of money due to the ‘scarcity’ of the product by virtue of it being illegal. It means that the money to bribe officers so as to let the drug peddlers conduct their business is readily available. The drug lords part with huge sums of money to bribe their officers and this fuels corruption in the country. Jeffrey Miron writing for ‘The Week’ says that black markets such as the drug market in the United States increase violence since even small disputes can not be sorted in a court of law but only through violent means. Legalizing all the drugs would effectively reduce corruption levels in the country. There is also a lot of gang related violence in the country, and most of it is related to the drug trade. Whenever a gang trade feels that its area of business is under threat from another gang, the result is gang wars between the two gangs and this affects even the innocent. The drug lords are also not afraid to take down powerful government officials and policemen that inhibit their businesses. The illegalization of these drugs means that there is no legal body that inspects and ensures that drug users access safe and quality drugs. Many drug users, therefore, suffer either intoxications or fatalities in severe cases from the consumption of unsafe and low-quality drugs. These are problems that the legalization of all drugs and opening of a body that inspects and ensures all drugs in the market are safe and of high quality can solve.
