In works of art, authors use a variety of tools to convey tone. In The Raven Edgar Allan Poe uses literary devices to convey a tone of horror. However, in The Simpsons, Tree house of terror rendition of The Raven, Matt Groening uses humor techniques to create a tone of hilarity to parody the original poem. Finally, Willing Hearts Productions performs the poem in a melancholy fashion, conveying a tone of sadness and hopelessness. None of these modern films quite show the terror that Poe intended in his original poem. In the poem The Raven Poe sets the tone of horror. For example-
“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?”

For example toward the end of the short the man gets angry at the raven because he tells him he wont see Lenore ever again. So in response to the raven saying “nevermore” he runs after him angrily trying to get the bird. In doing so he climbs the bookshelf and causes a lot of destruction. Also the raven starts to drop books on the man’s head that were also written by Edgar Allan Poe. Another example, in the story Lisa is reading this poem to Bart. So the author added Bart’s stubborn commentary every once and a while trying to tell Lisa how dumb the poem is and how bored he is. One other example is he uses sound effects that the man is saying that give the frustration humor. Multiple times in the short he screams in terror, which is funny to most people. He also adds in sentences such as “eat my shorts” and “why you little” to add some humor into the
