Ever been in an extreme fight with your parents? Ever thought that you just might hate them? You probably never have ever really hated your parents. Now, have you ever hated your parents so much that you simulate them dying and watch it over and over again, just because they didn’t give you what you wanted? Wendy and Peter have, in the short story “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury. This story takes place far in the future, where there is a room that is a 5D virtual reality that conforms to it’s occupants whims. Wendy, Peter and their parents own one of these rooms, but it is coming between, and wrecking their relationships. In “The Veldt,” Ray bradbury used symbolism, repetition, and foreshadowing to show the character’s conflicts.
The use of the nursery in “The Veldt” helps to strengthen the stories conflict. The father says, “Can I compete with an African veldt?” The veldt here is a symbol of how children can discard their parents for a piece of entertainment so easily. This demonstrates that the father believes the kids are throwing away their parents for the nursery, and the father is afraid he is losing his child to the nursery as well. “Just before he stepped inside, he heard a faraway scream.” This one specific scream keeps on occurring from the nursery in the story. This portrays that the scream is someone getting slain by the lions. This creates conflict because the parents don’t know what the kids are thinking of, or why they keep hearing the same familiar scream. It actually turns out that the kids are thinking up the idea of their parents getting eaten by the lions. This repetition of the scream relates to the idea that the kids and the parents have a bad relationship because of all the technology that is in between
