Overcoming hopelessness can be one of the most arduous endeavors that a person is faced with in their life. Without hope, we lose the very thing that makes us human, our ability to overcome our obstacles. It is that same challenge of maintaining hope which is clearly evident in the first season of the AMC show, The Walking Dead. A show which uses thematic patterns, symbolism, diction, allegory, conflict and anthropomorphism to depict a story that is more than just a series about a zombie apocalypse. It is the story of a group of people who are stripped away from the commonalities of life, faced to overcome obstacles in order to maintain their hope and sanity. In this episode, we meet Dr.Jenner, who has given up all hope and very much accepts his defeat. He clearly fits in as an unconventional archetype for the damsel in distress. Without our need for love and compassion we are not humans, we are merely animals. The importance of compassion is examined in episode 5: Wildfire, when after a horrific tragedy at the campsite where a multitude of walkers attacked a large number of the group. The aftermath of this disaster leaves the remaining in the group with an extremely hard decision. They have to decide if they should burn or bury their friends and family members. Knowing all that is at stake Lori speaks up and exclaims “We need to bury our dead, it’s what people do”. Without a doubt acting in a humane fashion is what separates us from animals, and the very thread of humanity. When faced with a battle that might take your humanity away, you have to remember to love and allow yourself to feel
