Every story has a tone, and every song has a tone of voice that helps to elaborate the tale. Contempt with his lifestyle the wanderer is very upbeat and as one listens they hear the tune and they can feel the drumstick bouncing off the drum in a steady repetitive rhythm. People nod their heads to the beat bouncing to the next line as the man bounces to each woman. The rhythm never changes; the song has put the man in a vicious cycle that he can never leave. Listeners will continue to nod their heads and he will continue to roam from town to town. The end of the song does not change or break the cycle which brings up the question of whether he will ever be able to stop and settle down. Where pretty girls are, he can be found. He brags that he has one girl (Flo) on his left arm, another (Mary) on his right, but a third girl (Janie) is the one he will be with tonight. His refusal to commit to a single woman is suggested by his name and the title of the song, The Wanderer. It is also revealed clearly in the first verse. He declares quite explicitly that he is the type of guy who will never settle down. In fact, he admits that he runs away from possible emotional entanglements: when [he] find [him]self fallin’ for some girl… he hops right on that car of [his] and drive around the world. His physical restlessness mirrors his movement from woman to woman. This lack of commitment is consistent with the anonymous nature of his relationships. One verse explains that he doesn’t differentiate between the women he dates: he kiss ‘em and he love ‘em, ‘cause to him they’re all the same. The wanderer is afraid to love while the man with an imagination has fallen in love with a stranger who in reality…doesn't even know of his existence. People who listen to the songs may differ in opinion on which man is truly happy. The wanderer exclaims he is happy as a clown and men may listen to this and think he has a good life with a different girl every night while others see his life as depressing because he will truly be alone forever. The man with his imagination can also be seen in two different lights. His ability to love and his loyalty to one woman is a grand quality but is he contempt with living only in his head? He does not approach his love instead only sits back and imagines a life with her. These songs give two different approaches to love and each story is incomplete. Each story goes about love with a different approach and for each story the listener is given the gift of finishing
