As stated in the previous paragraphs, amphetamines act primarily in the CNS. They increase alertness and mood and deliver a highly euphoric sensation to the brain. Causes of amphetamine dependence include: brain chemistry, genetic pre disposition, social pressures (i.e. weight loss and comfort in social settings), life stressors or lack of coping skills, and employment or education factors. In my opinion, the substance itself is not the cause of the addiction, it is more so the abilities gained from using the substance. Statistics show that 90% of college students use Adderall that was not prescribe to them for non-medical purposes. Full-time college students were more likely to abuse the substance in comparison to their non-college counterparts.
