Can you imagine being blown up because someone doesn’t want you to go to their school? Just because you look different? During the 1960’s, the south was going through a lot of racial issues.The tension between whites and black had never been higher. The book “The Watson's Go To Birmingham” is an exceptional example of what an African American family went through during the 1960’s. The 1960’s environment had a large impact on the Watson’s mindset, their relatives, and their actions. They were very different from modern families. The Watson family mindset was very different than from families these days. With the affects that it had on their mindset and relatives, you can definitely say that it impacted their actions. After all, how you think and how your relatives act around you would definitely impact how you act. The bombing of the church is a good example of how the 1960’s environment impacted the Watson’s actions. The Watson’s were trying to find Joey after the bombing,While observing them, Kenny stated,“I saw Momma and Dad and Byron holding on to each other, all three of them looking like they were crazy and trying to keep each other away from the pile of rocks that used to be the front of the church. Momma was so upset that she even forgot to cover the space in front of her teeth.” The Watson’s forgot about everything and went into panic mode. When Momma laughs or talks or smiles, she ALWAYS covered the space between her teeth, Then,she forgot all about it.This wasn’t the only bombing in the 1960’s, So this probably happened a few times. After the Watson’s went home to Flint, Michigan, Kenny went into a state of depression. The bombing made him hide behind the couch for hours. It made him confused.
