The White Hawk: Revenge by David Pilling takes place in the 15th century in England. It explores the two rivals of Lancaster and York, who are at civil war with each other. This book by David Pilling is a book that tells about the Bolton family and how they tried to survive during this time. The characters and emotions were very well written, so you can relate to them. The White Hawk: Revenge is a time during “The War of Roses”, which was a rough time for England. The story begins with Blore Heath in 1459 and it ends with Towton in 1461. Pilling is a great author who makes it feel as if you’re living during the time it takes place. This time is perhaps the most fascinating of the entire medieval period in England.

He also makes it understandable so you know what the story is about, even if you do not know the battles, or what was taken place during the time of the story. The family is very devoted to do anything in their will power to protect their homeland. Lancaster and York fight over the king and end up tearing each other apart throughout the battles. Author David Pilling, says ““Why did he pray? Because Christ was his Saviour and England was his charge. Henry had no other security. The deaths of thousands of his subjects were on his conscience....'Oh for the blanket of madness to cover me again,' he whispered, 'and veil me from the world's evil.” Henry didn’t know how to stop all the battles and he wasn’t strong enough to. All he could do was hope that the fighting would stop, and his homeland would be safe. The book is written with the old England text which can be confusing at times. However, Pilling makes the story very understandable. I enjoyed the books fast pace that kept me wanting to know what would happen next. I really liked the writing of Pilling, and how he made sure as a reader what was happening in the book, but also during that time. I actually look forward to reading the second
