Dust Tainted Morality
John L McCarty was the young charismatic editor and publisher for the Dalhart Texan in 1929. The Texan had been his since he was a prepubescent twelve year old boy. he was a confident and ambitious man with charisma. He was a fierce leader and fearlessly took it upon himself to be a town builder with a pen. He relentlessly tried to arouse the potential he knew Dalhart possessed. He desired to be a part of setting Dalhart apart from other mediocre towns. He loved his town and strived to hold it to a superior standard. The Worst Hart Time displayed McCarty's struggle in upholding his high morals while desperately seeking to propel his town to growth.
He never ceased in attempting to pump life into the declining town. McCarty faithfully uplifted his town in his articles and made sure to only show its good sides. His paper was used to selectively report news. He once printed a huge picture of Dalhart looking incredible. His caption included the words "Beautiful panoramic view of Dalhart shows it as a city of homes where living is a real pleasure. He compromised truth for positive publicity. He aggressively made his opinions known simply by unapologetically stating them. An example of this was when used the Texan to proclaim "This is the best damned country God's sun ever shone upon." He was also a man who sought opportunity. When the stock market collapsed and left people in other areas in a frenzy McCarty saw it as an opportunity for Dalhart residents that they should not miss out on. When rabbits overtook the terrain McCarty organized a massacre. He managed to call out about two thousand people to participate. Some came because they were bloodthirsty while others were merely looking for festivity. It was undeniable that he had the power to unite
