An enjoyable story has an appealing protagonist that a reader empathizes with, which entices the continuation of the narrative; it is difficult to stop reading when there is an emotional connection with the individual. A conflict that is prevalent in society during the time frame of the writing is also fundamental. It is through conflict that the main character either grows or perishes, there would be no excitement nor development without a struggle.
The narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is intriguing. The author draws the audience into her obsession, hoping that there is a turn of events, not wanting the individual to reach her own demise. Isolation and “rest” cause her personality to become more delusional as the tragedy progresses. The husband believes his wife requires rest to overcome her depression; “and am absolutely forbidden to “work” until I am well again” (581). In opposition, she tries to continue to secretly write, “I did write for a while in spite of them” (581). The continuation of this treatment leads to a contradictory outcome, instead of a cure, depression leads to delusion. The wife coming out of the wall shows that she has triumphed over the hostage of isolation and her creeping over her husband’s body that she has overcome his domination, “Now why should that man have fainted? But he did, and right across my path by the wall, so that I had to creep over him every time”
