Theatrical Side Of Play: Our Educational Journey

When we hear the word “play” we often brush it off as a childhood act with little importance. This is due to the conditioning we have received form the “real world”, however, we seem to overlook that playing is an extremely influential tool in our lives. As children we played to learn, communicate, explore, and develop more than we could ever know.
While reading the material it was very evident that the author feels that “play” is important to our everyday life as well as our educational journey. In our article the author not only shows us the theatrical side of play, she also showed us all the benefits of it from play in many other aspects of life. Somewhere along our life like the loss of our innocence we also lost our ability to play, imagine and willingly create or be. In theatre we also have to engage and be flexible, we have to create a special space on the stage and sometimes we have to improv. All these can be learned from playing. In the theatre we do a lot of playing type games as warm ups. This helps get our bodies moving, our brains pumping and it often gets us familiar and bonding with our cast mates.
In my future class room I will most definitely use play, especially when classes first start. As the reading said, you need a “safe space” or safe environment. As a future educator it is my goal to create that along with an appreciation for dramatic arts in all my students. I believe I can achieve both by playing. Playing will break down walls, and make my students more comfortable interacting with each other, which is good because they will be performing in my class. They will learn to open up to each other through play and be more willing, in my opinion to transfer that to their class
