In Hurston's novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie, a young mixed girl growing up in the south, dreams of love and a fulfilling life shared with someone by her side. However, life seems to have another plan in mind, and she soon discovers that being a woman is challenging and that sometime, death can lead to new beginnings. From an early point in her life, Janie is determined to make love the center of her life, yet she regularly faces challenges and people who wanted anything but love to be her priority. For example, her grandmother, Nanny, was angered by the fact would kiss a boy unworthy of her and furious at the idea that Janie didn’t want to marry Logan simply because she didn’t love him. So much so that she slapped Janie after she initially refused to marry Logan. However, after Janie had married Logan, Nanny quietly passed in her sleep. With this came Janie’s opportunity to leave Logan. After Nanny passed, she began a retaliating against Logan’s orders and ran away with a man known as Joe. She loved him and everything he he began to change. Before she knew it, he was ordering her around to fulfil his every command. Then, he began abusing her. Before she knew it, she was nothing more than his slave. She lost all hope of being happy and simply fell victim to him for years, until she one day realized he was not the same strong man he was before. He soon fell ill and passed away. However, his death led to Janie’s freedom. She was finally free to dress, act, and live however she wanted! Not to mention, she was left with all his money.
