I would require all new, first-time college students to read, “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” by Zora Neale Hurston. I was actually required to read this book my freshman year of high school and while I learned a lot from it, I was not in the right stage to be impacted by this book. I did not take advantage of the knowledge and lessons that I know would have made a bigger difference to me if I had been older.
“Their Eyes Were Watching God” taught me to read between the lines. Reading between the lines helps to acquire analyzing skills because the sentences and paragraphs in this book are not straight to the point. There are a lot of similes, metaphors, and connections to things that one would not understand by just reading it once. Once you start unlocking its secrets, you do not want to stop reading it. But it takes more than just reading it to understand it; you have to break it down word by word. This would teach incoming freshman to not only be patient, but also see early on in their college career that the readings in their studies will not be simple. They need to be read multiple times and then analyzed to understand it, even if it’s a simple question in a quiz.

This book not only gives examples of every situation and feeling that one might encounter in college, but also explains the necessary steps it takes to move on. Now, this is not a book of solutions to life’s problems. It does not sugarcoat what happens after hardships, but it emphasizes that time heals and while time is healing, actions need to be made in order to better the outcome of the situation. This would help develop a student’s foundation into how to react and proceed after a certain conflict or time of
