What would you do if you were being both physically and mentally abused by your significant other? Would you stay, or would you leave? Unlike Janie Crawford, I would stand my ground and I would leave. In the story, “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston, in the realistic fiction genre, Janie Crawford, a young biracial woman who grew up with her grandmother, she calls Nanny, was forced to marry Logan Killicks, who was too old for her. Janie was only seventeen years old when she and Mr. Killicks got married. However, after their marriage, she ended up running off with Joe Starks on a train to get married to him. After a little into Janie and Joe’s marriage, he becomes very abusive to her, physically and mentally. Finally, Janie ends up with Vergible “Tea Cake” Woods, and lives a happy life. As Nanny told Janie that is who she is going to marry, Janie pleads to her saying, “Ah ain’t gointuh do it no mo’. Nanny please don’t make me marry Mr. Killicks” (Hurston 15). Janie does not like Mr. Killicks; she thinks he’s old and simply not for her. Nanny feels that, despite his age, Logan can provide Janie with protection and financial stability. She explains this by telling Janie, “Tain’t Logan Killicks I want you to have, baby, it’s protection” (Hurston 15). This part in the story plays a role in the theme: power of speech and silence because Janie did not hold her ground against her grandmother in what she wanted. Her opinion towards having to marry Logan Killicks was completely overlooked by both her grandmother and Logan Killicks himself.
