In Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, he has a lot of thematic ideas that are incorporated into this short story. These ideas are deep and thought provoking- as a consequence, some people may be nervous to talk about them- but I don’t think so. Therefore, I will be discussing the following ideas such as dreams and reality, the difference between right and wrong, and gender and race/ethnicity issues. First, I will discuss the importance and meaning of dreams and reality. This thematic idea was important in Steinbeck’s novella because it really talks about the American people. This thematic idea was important in Steinbeck’s novella because it showed the authority that other races, white people, had over another race- black people. An example from the story is when Lennie, Candy, and Curley’s wife were all in Crook's room. Crooks was irritated about all these white people in his room, mostly at Curley’s wife, and then he snapped at her saying that he can get the boss to never let Curley’s wife come in the barn ever again. Then she basically said that she can get Crooks lynched and then he closed up on himself. The reason he did this is because he would’ve gotten killed. Another example from the story is that Crooks can’t go into the bunkhouse because he was black and he wasn’t white. The white people, back in the day, would abuse their power that they had over black people and manipulate them into doing whatever it was the white people needed done. All in all, I think that putting these ideas into the novella were pretty important in emphasizing what Steinbeck found necessary to talk about. Of Mice and Men is a rarity because it talks about life in the early 1900s. This novella showed just how understandably ready Steinbeck was to talk about this situation and we need more people to be comfortable with talking about these hard-to-talk-about subjects.
