During the period of slavery, there were many situations of when owners would injure the slaves. When this was occurred, it did not end well for some of the slaves. For example, the slave narratives used frequently repeated motifs. They were all exposed to “physical and emotional abuse of slavery.” One day, Proctor was trying to clean the house and she then found biscuit. She was so hungry that she ate the biscuit. Soon after, the lady comes in and ask where’d that biscuit go. She told her Miss that she ate it because she was so hungry. The Miss grabs the broom and started to beat her and calling her low down n*****. This was one of many stories about abuse. (Jennie Proctor Volume 16 Texas) Other than abuse, the slave narratives also used purposes. For example, Andrew Jackson used the emphasized the cruelty of individual slave owners. He went on saying that a slave named “Old Prince” did not do enough work and that the owner would always beat him. This showed Frequently Repeated Motifs of the experience of slavery: those who succeeded and those who failed. There are many stories of those who succeeded, and those who did not. John Andrew Jackson was one of the slaves who survived the experience of being free. He was able to escape before the people that were looking for him to bring him back into slavery. Unfortunately, his brother Ephraim was not able to escape, and he was forced to leave his wife, whom he loved and had to marry the house girl. There are many more stories out there about people getting caught and they would have to go back to slavery, and there are also many stories about people who got to be free once again.
