Deception in The Crucible HOOK. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is based off of The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 to 1693. The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings that dealt with people accused of witchcraft. Witchcraft was common because people of that time did not have the advanced technology that we have nowadays to prove that witchcraft is inaccurate. When accused, people would commonly deceive and accuse other people to get themselves off the hook. Thus, deception is a theme throughout The Crucible.
