Imagine a society in which people are not allowed to be individuals. Everything is collective, personal thoughts and feelings are prohibited. In this world, they do not have electricity or modern transportation. All the citizens have to wear an iron bracelet on their left wrist that has their names engraved on it. These names should not qualify as names because they are only a word and a number. Citizens do not even know words like “I”, they only use the word “we” when describing themselves. This is the society that Equality 7-2521 lives in. The theme of the novel, “Anthem” by Ayn Rand is individualism. More specifically, people are not going to act normal if they do not know how to be individual beings. Because of this the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, is an individual who is very egotistical.

He was never considered normal by anyone he knew. He is superior to his peers in more ways than one. “We are six feet tall and the leaders pointed to us and frowned and said ‘ There is evil in your bones, Equality 7-2521 for your body has grown beyond the bodies of your brothers.’” (18). Not only is his body superior to his “brothers” his mind is also. After some time he started to develop individual thoughts and feelings. The first feelings he ever developed were for Liberty 5-300, they had forbidden conversations and with time, she fell for him too. Equality was very smart, he discovered electricity which was an invention lost after the unmentionable times. (The unmentionable times refers to the modern times we live in today.) This brought him to have a big ego. After his discovery of electricity, Equality 7-2521 decides to share his newfound knowledge with the house of the scholars and they reject him. Because of this Equality runs away into the forest. Liberty follows him and they discover a house filled with books. In these
