Greed can overcome a person to the point where it takes over and controls their life. In the book, The Pearl, John Steinbeck expresses how greed can control a person. The main character, Kino, is taken over and controlled by greed. Throughout the story, Steinbeck uses literary devices to show the way greed takes over Kino. These devices include characterization, foreshadowing, and symbolism. One literary device John Steinbeck uses is characterization. Characterization is the description of one character's personality. Steinbeck uses this literary device to describe Kino throughout the story. When we first meet Kino, he is a person who loves his family, and is happy, even though they are poor. After he found the “pearl of the world”, he began to change. Greed starts to overwhelm Kino. He begins to protect the pearl at all costs, and he ends up killing a man in the process. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. In the beginning, Kino thought the pearl was beautiful and shiny. He thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Toward the end of the book he could see how much disaster the pearl caused. In one quote, Steinbeck writes, “He looked into its surface and it was gray and ulcerous” (Steinbeck 86). This quote shows that in the end, Kino understood the pearl was evil, not luscious. During the story, Steinbeck shows how the pearl changed through the emotions of Kino. Overall, The Pearl has an abundant amount of literary devices. John Steinbeck does an outstanding job of using these devices in this story. He describes how Kino’s life changes very poetically.
