As a descendant of Cain, a monster of the human, the huge differences separate Grendel away from the civilization. Not only Grendel but also other characters who were suffered from isolation. John Gardner, author of “Grendel”, expressed the isolation of the characters by showing the struggle and problems of themselves. Leading to better understanding about the world and the results of their behavior. The meaningless world full of stupidity people and confusing creatures, creates the pattern of time. Every life will lead to one result, death.Each characters suffered from isolation in different ways. Loneliness and hopelessness confused them. Loneliness takes over his heart and because of that he started his journey outside his cave which lead him to encounter the reality of world. As in Chapter 2,“I understood that, finally and absolutely, I alone exist”(22). From this quote, Grendel seem to learn his lesson though his little experience and began to grow up in adult stage. The Dragon choose to stay out off the humanity, including other creatures, and live alone with his treasure. Nothing can change it, even the Dragon know the future but he still rather living with isolation. Willing to feel alone but happy in another way of thought. In my opinion, the Dragon’s mind might be less suffering than Grendel. His understanding also affect Grendel’s mind and turn Grendel into something he does not want to.
