In today’s society it’s very easy to overlook the importance of being kind. Kindness is an act of being nice to someone, that brings happiness and satisfaction to both people. A small smile is sometimes the only thing that can get our weakened souls through a tough day. Kindness can be difficult at times, but it always works out in the end. A small act of kindness goes a long way. I felt as if nothing could make this horrible day better. As soon as school ended, I went to my sister’s car and complained about everything that went wrong. She was trying to show empathy but couldn’t find the right words. She thought of one thing that always makes me feel better, food. I got to choose anything I wanted, and she payed for it. An important trait that Odysseus shows in the Odyssey is kindness. Odysseus demonstrates this throughout the entire story. Many times, he chooses the safety of his men over himself. An example of this is when Circe turned his men into pigs, but Odysseus went back to save them. This doesn’t only show kindness, but courage and bravery as well. The easier thing would have been to escape: ensuring his own life. This isn’t true. It’s easy to mix up a people pleaser with being kind. To be kind, you can have your own opinion and express how you feel. You don’t always have to be the one everyone relies on anytime they need. Kindness isn’t only about being kind. It’s also about telling people what they need to know to make sure they’re going to be happy in the long run. It’s about telling them you’re going to support them no matter what. “True kindness can be tough, can it can leave us feeling less than kind.” (Braime,1) This basically means that sometimes the best thing to do is to tell the truth, because in the long run it is the most kindest thing to do. Kindness can be hard to show to some people at times. Especially if they aren’t completely favored . It is important to show kindness to others, because they will most likely reflect it. Being kind to yourself, is just as important as being kind to others. If they are kind to you, it’s easier to be kind to yourself, and the other way around.
