Theme Of Love In Huck Finn

Throughout, Mark Twain's controversial novel, The Adventures of Huck Finn, there is a reoccurring theme of love and affection; these are the ideas that drive Huck through the novel coming close to some people but being driven away from others. His relationship with people like Miss Watson, Jim, and Aunt Sallie taught him how to care for others; however when Pap was back in town and he was getting aggressive towards Huck he once again was drawn away from wanting love. From the offset it was Miss Watson who wanted to teach him how to be civilized and well behaved in order to fit into the society. In Huck and Pap’s case, Miss Watson believes that he will not be in that safe environment, Pap says otherwise claiming that he has always been there for Huck. “Here's the law a-standing ready to take a man's son away from him -- a man's own son, which he has had all the trouble and all the anxiety and all the expense of raising (pg.28).” Pap shows his love through greed because huck has that $600 from that gold he found, and at times Huck is drawn close to Pap. Though in a matter of instances Huck for no apparent reason is drawn away from him, almost scared to be around him. “ He chased me round and round the place with a claspknife, calling me the Angel of Death, and saying he would kill me, and then I couldn't come for him no more (pg. 31). One of the major roles Jim fulfills is stepping in for Huck’s father figure and protects him from anything that would negatively affect Huck or just simply scare him. “It’s a dead man.
