Prejudice of The Mockingbird

Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. This is the common definition found on Google. Prejudice is a common occurrence in our everyday lives. We are constantly judging first and thinking second without even questioning it. Prejudice is one of the main ideas of the book To Kill A Mockingbird. There are many different types of prejudice are illustrated by the situation of Mrs. Dubose, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley.

Mrs. Dubose was a good example of someone who judged first constantly. She was a cranky old lady who had a morphine addiction,and who spent most of her day either in bed or in her wheelchair. A prime example of her prejudice is a conversation between her

He hasn't been seen in years and there are tons of stories and rumors that surround his name. He is a shy person whose stays away from the daily drama of things that happen in the town. Jem gives a great description of what the kids all believe Boo to look like. “Boo was about six-and-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained-if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time”(Lee,13) All the kids in the town make up stories about him and play games where one pretends to be him and chases everyone else. Many kids were even afraid of his house in general. The kids would eat pecans that had fallen that were near the yard because they believed they were poisoned. Scout, Dill and Jem tried getting Boo a note by fishing pole once. Jem “attached the note to the end of the fishing pole,m let the pole out across the yard and pushed it toward the window he had selected.” That just shows how afraid they were of Boo because they would get remotely close enough to the house for something even to happen to them. Boo was never any of the things they expected of him and helped them from time to time. He tried to fix Jems ripped pants and gave Scout a blanket in the snowy weather. He was the complete opposite of what people made him out to
