Moria Young’s dystopian novel Blood Red Road was published in 2011 and follows the young protagonist, Saba. On their 18th birthday cloaked men storm Saba and her twin brother’s remote home, killing their broken father and capturing Lugh. Thirsty for revenge, Saba sets out across a barren landscape, havocked by the ‘Wreckers’ with little sister Emmi in tow. Through the examination of the novel the following major themes can be identified: the strength of family bonds and being open to friendship.
Incorporated heavily into Blood Red Road is the concept of family. This is evident in Saba’s lack of remorse over her father’s death and her will to find Lugh. This emotional response shows that Saba’s bond with her twin brother is the most valued possession
