Themes In Flannery O Connor's Good Country People

In life we may come in contact with people who seem to be perfect and true to our standards, but some people do a wonderful job of disguising who they really are. In order to not become out done by people, we sometimes put up a guard and try not to allow people to get close to us. In the story “Good Country People,” the author Flannery O’Connor uses the characters Hulga Hopewell and Manly to show how we are not always as intelligent as we think we are and some people are not always who they seem to be. Also shows we can’t always trust people and everything they say to us. Hopewell, and Hulga. In the story, the first day Mrs. Hopewell met Manly Pointer she invited him in her home without knowing him very well (O’Connor 4). You can’t always invite people into your house without knowing them well, because you never know their true intentions. This leads to him becoming close to Hulga. In the story, it says “She was always careful to how she committed herself” (O’Connor 8). Manly’s effect on her lead to him making her catch feelings for him and falling for his act. The story also says, she reached his lips and remained there, kissing him again and again as if she were trying to draw all the breath out of him. She couldn’t see past his evil ways because he made her feel so special which led to her getting very comfortable with him. When all was said and done she realized that he wasn’t the man she thought he was and was fooled. One theme in “Good Country People” is that people are not always what they try to trick us to believe they are, which is shown in the story through Manly Pointer’s false beliefs, schemes, and his effect on Mrs. Hopewell and Hulga. People use their beliefs to fool people into believing that they are good people but they end up being the complete opposite. They end up playing mean tricks on innocent people who trusted them and sometimes even breaking hearts. The author shows us through these tricks that we should be careful he we open our doors up
