Frank Beddor’s The Looking Glass Wars is a retold version of the tory Alice in Wonderland. In The Looking Glass Wars, Alyss is a girl with the power to summon anything that she imagines. Her mother, Queen Genevieve, gets her castle raided and her body decapitated be her sister, Redd. Genevieve’s bodyguard, Hatter, remains loyal to the dead queen and helps Alyss escape into the “real world”. Some years later Alyss returns to wonderland and defeats Redd, claiming her rightful place as queen of Wonderland. Frank Beddor’s retelling of Alice in Wonderland shows many important themes, but one that is always there is that you should be perseverant and loyal to the ones you love. Hatter, Alyss, and Queen Genevieve all tried to protect each other and even after the death of Genevieve, Hatter and Alyss still remained loyal to her.
One of the most loyal people in the book is Hatter Maddigan, the dead queen’s bodyguard.

She saved dodge in the middle of a battle between a cannonball spider. “Its pincers opened and moved in toward Dodge’s stomach. Concentrate, think, imagine. A muzzle formed out of nowhere-a rust-colored contraption that covered the spider’s pincers, rounding their pointed ends.” (257) and the cat ““Dodge!” Alyss shouted, and in a reflex, she conjured an AD52 into his hand” (342) . She was loyal to the orphaned children. She helped them get food in their bellies , but they ended betraying her. Her loyalty to Wonderland and perseverance to regain her imagination made her able to defeat Redd and save Wonderland.
The Queen lost her life to save Alyss. Her love and loyalty towards every wonderlander, especially Alyss, was a sign of hope towards Alyss regaining her imagination. Even though she got killed in the battle between Redd, she helped Alyss and Hatter escape into the looking glass. “No matter what happens, I will always be near you, sweetheart.
