To define what “Theology of Worship” is, one might need to first define what the words “Theology”, and “Worship” mean. When I think about the word “Theology” I think of the study / thoughts of God or discovering information about God. When I think of the word worship, I think of an action in which people display their adoration for someone or something. I mean, think about those boy bands in the 90’s, or even One Direction and Justin Bieber and how much their fans adored/worshiped them. So I imagine if I were to combine these two words it would be the worship of God, or ways of worshiping God. However, worship can happen any day of the week, and worship does not have to happen in a Sanctuary. Worship can happen in a classroom at a middle school as students share scriptures with each other. Worship can happen in a nursing home chapel service lead by a retired pastor. Worship can happen in one’s home office, as they dive into the scriptures for meditation and reflection.
It would be very easy to say that worship is singing songs to God, however I believe there is a whole lot more to worship than this very shallow perspective. For when I look at the scriptures, I can see many fashions of worship. Just look at the Old Testament and the worship that the Hebrew people offered God. When they worshiped, they would offer animal sacrifices that were burnt on an altar. For I believe that it is through these practices that we are displaying what and why we believe it. At the end of the day, my life being handed over to the Lord for his work on this earth is probably the clearest picture of worship. After reading through Webber’s book, “Planning Blended Worship”, I can see there are numerous ways for how I might display my worship from standing, sitting, kneeling, raising my hands, to lay face down in prostration. I belief when I am able to offer full surrender in this prostration position as Webber writes, that I am at a place of full on worship with my life (Webber, 47).
