Third Person Omniscient In 1984 By George Orwell

Orwell uses third person limited rather than third person omniscient because he wants readers to connect with the protagonist, Winston, and his struggle to put sense and meaning to all the manipulation around him. Third person omniscient would allow the narrator to narrate what goes on in each character’s head-- Julia, Katherine, Syme, O’Brien etc... Orwell chooses against this idea because it would lose the strong connection between the readers and Winston. If the readers understood what was going on in Julia or O’Brien’s mind, the novel would primarily lose the helplessness of Winston’s position. Moreover, the novel may lose focus and display too many point of views for the readers to understand the complex meaning of an already-complex society.
