Visual arts was a very important part of the Romantic period and had great impact in it. One of the visual arts during that time that were essential during this period was landscaping. Thomas Cole was one of the most important artists that liked to do landscaping paintings. He traveled and discovered many places, so that he could show that men could not taint nature. Nature was a very important part of romanticism because they could express moral and religious meanings. A lot of people who were trying to find the truth through paintings were highly inspired by Thomas Cole. Thomas Cole was born on February 1, 1801 in England. He incorporated his moral and religious views by painting landscapes that had a feeling of peace and hopefulness. Also, his paintings had a mixture of realism by painting in detail the landscape and idealism by giving it a divine representation. One of his famous works was “The Course of the Empire”, which is separated into give different stages. The stages are The Savage State, The Pastoral State, The Consummation of Empire, Destruction, and Desolation. All of these canvases showed the relationship been nature and man. He was trying to tell us that man can create things and dominate an area but sooner or later it will all come down because nature is the real dominator and as we can see throughout history civilizations have risen and fallen. He painted all of these canvases in the same place, but they were all with a different weather, time, and season. This tells us the truth that even though man can dominate an area, it will not be forever because nature
