Thesis Statement

The encounters between Thomas Jefferson, one of America’s founding fathers, and his slave, Sally Hemings, is often referred to as an American controversy but the real controversy is how their relationship affected American politics of the past and present.

This is a reliable source because it a picture of James T. Callender’s article on Thomas Jefferson affair with his “concubine” Sally Hemings. This article was published on September 1, 1802 by Richmond recorder, and it marks the beginning of the entire Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson controversy.

This is a reliable primary source because it is another source written by Thomas Jefferson himself. This is a bill Thomas Jefferson wrote in attempt to establish religious freedom, (which was established in Virginia in 1786). In this letter ThomasJefferson speaks of free minds and hypocrisy, and the editors note shows that with this bill he has the assistance of James Madison. Therefore it causes me to wonder if these were Thomas Jefferson’s genuine ideals.
