Common Sense

Thomas Paine’s Common Sense talks about equality and why monarchy and

hereditary succession is wrong. No man is in the place to grant a man king. God

created us equally and only he can be our king. Yet in the earlier years the people

wanted a leader, a ruler, and a king. Before they had kings they had peace, no wars.

It is because of kings that we have disorder.

Idolatry was at an extreme when the idea of having kings was presented by

the Heathens, as this was a successful creation that the Devil has made. The

scripture does not support putting one man above the other as this is shown when

the Jews try to obtain a king. The first time the Jews tried to appoint a king, it was

Gideon. Gideon led the Jews to a victory against the Midianites, so the Jews

proposed to making him a king and making his future sons after him a king also.

This offer was very tempting to Gideon; it offered the kingdom to him and to his

future sons. Yet he still declined saying the Lord shall rule over you. Like Gideon,

Samuel tried to tell the people of Israel when they wanted to appoint him king.

Samuel told the people that the king that will have power over them will take your

sons and appoint them for himself. He will take your daughters and use them as

cooks and confectionaries. He will take portions of your farming, maids, servants,

and cattle. Samuel told them that when that day comes, the Lord would not listen to

their cries.

Even though they wanted a king, they also wanted hereditary succession and

an evil that comes from that is that a minor at any age can be king. By this time

England has adopted the plan of having kings, and has had thirty kings and two

minors have been king. Even though England has kings, what do the kings do? For

an honest man is more worth of a king.
