In this futuristic society based on pleasure without moral consequences, Brave New World manipulates the people into mind numbing dependence. The society is only stable from the loss of freedom and personal responsibility. They are controlled from birth until death. Power in Brave New World is maintained through technological interventions, drugs and conditioning.

The government in Brave New World retains control by making its citizens happy and superficially fulfilled. “We also predestine and condition. We decant our babies as socialized human beings, as Alphas or Epsilons, as future sewage workers or future…”(Huxley 13). They know who they are since birth so there is no room to think or be unhappy. They strip their dignity, morals, values and emotions, which keep the leaders, power over them.

Another form of control the leaders uses is the drug called soma. This drug calms people and at the same time makes them high. Any unpleasant thought or emotions they have, they take soma. Soma eliminates any kind of deep thinking or free will in this society. The leaders use soma to retain power over the citizens. “…the old men have no time, no leisure from pleasure, not a moment to sit down and think- or if ever by some unlucky chance such a crevice of time should yawn in the solid substance of their distractions, there is always soma…”(Huxley 58).

Lastly, the people are conditioned to fit this society’s needs and to do what they are told. Unlike in a normal environment, embryos do not grow in the mother’s wombs but instead in bottles.
