Autism is a disability targets and influences the communication skills of an individual, in relation to other people. It affects communication as well as how the individual comprehends the environment around them. According to the Research Autism journals, one of the three articles I read over discusses the three general features of autism spectrum disorder. One of the three features that was an important detail is their social interaction issues “persistent difficulties with social communication and social interaction. For example, they may find it hard to begin or carry on a conversation, they may not understand social rule …” (Research Autism). This is seen everywhere children of ASD are present. I have actually had practice with this because my best friend’s little brother is autistic. Another feature that children with ASD struggle with is having a grasp on their emotions. The biggest problem when it comes to emotions is that ASD individuals do not know how to express themselves “impairments in the use of facial expression, body postures, and gestures to regulate social interaction” (Hamilton p.1517). This creates a lack mutual sharing of emotions between others and the ASD child. The articles also mentions that children with ASD struggle when to properly express certain emotions in response to certain stimulus. Being unable to grasp the fundamental emotion recognition skills could cause problem in the social development of a child. A friend, parent, teacher, any type of peer can help the child to develop proper emotional characteristics. The last feature that is noticeable in individuals with ASD is their difficult behavior. Children that deal with ASD perform behaviors that are not appropriate at home or in the classroom “Aggression and self-injury are two behaviors characteristic of children with autism and autism spectrum disorders”
