The speech given by the first lady in this ceremony is full of encouragement and inspiration to the audience; in this case students, who are about to embark on their journey after the Bowie State University. The speech is aimed at letting them know that they need to desire education and learn to depend on it as a major influence in this generation. She is persistent of how education is regarded in society today and she clearly highlights that compared to high school dropouts, people holding degrees make nearly three times more money than them. Particularly, she highlights the struggles and difficulties the earlier generation which existed before the construction of this school faced everyday in order to quench their thirst for education. She describes how African Americans in the earlier days were determined to access education in learning facilities even after being denied that right. She emphasizes that they had the motivation to learn more.
