Hello I am a fulltime student here at Tidewater Community College. I would like to start off by saying I enjoy being here at the Virginia Beach campus. Tidewater allows me to continue working on my Opticians license while perusing a degree in business. In the past school has always posed dilemmas for me. As a child I was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. Growing up, I’ve learned how to utilize my accommodation and work through these disabilities. However there are still some issue I find painfully irksome.
The other day I was held back at work, which made me late for my night classes. I had to rise early for a test the next morning. A clash of responsibilities resulted in my decision not to attend those classes. This is a typical college scenario. My choice resulted in a great test grade at the expense of getting a zero for my attendance/participation. I stay ahead of my appears, therefor makeup work isn’t a dilemma. But sometimes I do worry about my attendance and how bad it effects my grade.

ADHD makes it a challenge to stay focused, filtering off topic or ill relevant information makes focusing more difficult. Missing material from a physics course is a lot more dire then missing a public speaking lecture because the amount of pertinent information is minimal. If we are capable of skimming the questions and bold faced words and retaining more than opposed to sitting in a two hour lecture, I believe we should be able to learn in whatever way is most efficient for us.

Flexibility in our schedule is what allows us to work, attend seminars, develop our hobbies, all while working towards a degree, and that’s what makes Tidewater so great after all.
