Surprisingly, in Till We Have Faces, when Orual ventures to gather her sister’s remains, she miraculously finds Psyche alive near the location where she was supposed to be sacrificed. Even without the young maiden’s death, the pestilence, famine, drought, and decay within Glome mysteriously vanish. Therefore, as I speculated, the gods do not intervene to cause or halt the city’s misfortunes. Thus, the horrific death of Psyche would have been in vain. The demand for human sacrifice reveals both the elders’ archaic and sexist views of women. In addition, throughout the world of Glome, there is a pervasive negative attitude toward women which becomes most obvious when Orual becomes Queen. Upon arriving into power, she gets first-hand experience as to what gender inequality is like. Within what seems like a few minutes of Orual acquiring the status of Queen, she is deemed as being less than a man since “A woman cannot lead the armies of Glome to war.” (Lewis 212) The reasoning for this connects to their archaic and unjust depiction they see fit of a woman: they are all impotent beings that talk too much nonsense.
