A landmark case around the Vietnam era, Tinker vs Des Moines Schools was based around free speech rights. In December of 1965, John Tinker, Mary Beth Tinker and Christopher Eckhardt all planned to wear black armbands in support of the de-escalation of the war in Vietnam. The school’s principal believed this was an absolute atrocity and created a school-wide rule that said that students must remove armbands or be suspended. The group of protesters, unsurprisingly, were suspended for not removing their armbands, and sued the school system through their parents. Their case went through the US District Court, who decided the school system acted reasonably when asking the students to remove their armbands, so the Tinkers appealed to the Appeals
