What is Title 9? In 1972 the Title 9 law was adapted by the legislator. It was intended to decrease gender discrimination by forcing federally subsidized educational institutions to offer equal opportunities to both women and men. The law reads, “No Person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Essentially the law makes any school that received federal funds provide the same treatment for boys and girls. I think we can all agree that this law had good intentions but over time the law needs to be revised.

The law that was originated to end discrimination against women has only shifted its discrimination against men. Not only has it hurt men’s sport at the high school and collegiate level but it also has impacted our national men’s Olympic teams. Without sports like gymnastics, swimming, track and field, and wrestling at the high school and college level the Olympic talent has also been greatly impacted.
Over the past forty plus years, since Title 9 has been in place, Women’s sports have grown. Title 9 not only has helped with women’s participation in sports but it also decreased the dropout rate of girls in high school and increased the number of girls attending colleges and universities. Additionally, Title 9 has helped to develop many of our women US Olympic athletes. The 2012 Olympic games in London where called the Title 9 Olympic games because how well the US women athletes
