In the past, men were viewed as far more superior than woman. This form of thinking has resulted in women being treated differently for centuries. Except as time passed, woman have been granted much more freedom and equal opportunities compared to men. Along with major milestones of freedom and rights granted to woman, was the development of Title IX in 1972. In which, it has provided protection for woman in the sense of equality by prohibiting sexual discrimination in education. In turn, this has led men to feel threatened, and has left their programs partially effected. Although Title IX still has a long way to go before full gender equality, but it has helped women tremendously so far. Since the release of Title IX, there has been an increase in the amount of high school girls’ sport participation. For instance, in 1971, before Title IX, 7.3% of high school girls participated, whereas in 2001, thirty years after Title IX, participation has risen to 45% (Notes on Gender, p.4). This increase of girls participating in high school sports demonstrates how effective and comforting it is to have such a policy in place for women sport programs, that it allows one to feel free to play. But due to Title IX enforcing that all aid and services are equally distributed between male and female sports, leaves men feeling like they have received the short end of the stick. With the development of Title IX, men feel that their sport programs are being threatened, in that, many programs have cut large numbers of male sport programs in order to equally accommodate the women’s programs.
