To Be or Not to Be (1942) and Inglorious Basterds (2009), are two plot driven films that both deal with issues during World War II. Director Ernst Lubitsch’s film, To Be or Not to Be and Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds both do a wonderful job of establishing a war setting, while also being able to convey a unique cinematic tones. To Be or Not to Be follows a group of actors and actresses during World War II. The film begins with the group of actors rehearsing for a Nazi play. Later that night, the group performs Hamlet. Maria Tura (Carole Lombard), the leading actress, receives a gift from Stanislav Sobinski (Robert Stack), who comes to her dressing room in the middle of Josef Tura’s (Jack Benny) speech. Shosanna (Melanie Laurent), an escaped Jew, decides to take revenge on the Nazi party during a movie premiere that Hitler will be attending. Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Bruhl), a Nazi war hero, stars in a film that portrays his heroic acts. Zoller persuades the director to move the premiere to Shosanna’s theatre, because Zoller has a romantic interest with her. Shosanna uses this opportunity to trap the audience in the theatre, and burn it down. At the same time, a group of fearsome American soldiers work with Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) to assassinate the Nazi members during the premiere as well. On the night of the screening, the soldiers sneak into the showing, but are discovered and taken away by Hans Landa (Christopher Waltz). Landa proposes to Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) the idea to let the assassinations happen in order to end the war. Raine obliges, and he takes Landa prisoner for the allies.
