In the classic novel To Have and Have Not, the author Ernest Hemingway creates many unique characters. Although Hemingway wrote it as a fictional novel, the way he depicts the characters make it seem like a real story. Each chapter has a different character as the narrator, so the reader can get a more in depth understanding of the personalities of each character. The three main characters of To Have and Have Not are Harry Morgan, Marie Morgan, and Albert Tracy. Harry Morgan is the main character in To Have and Have Not. He is a large, muscular forty-two year old man living in Miami, Florida. Harry is an experienced charter fisherman who runs liquor throughout the Caribbean. His main reason for needing money his to support his wife and children, who depend on only his income to live. Harry goes to the bar near his dock and drinks daily, and knows almost all the locals in his area. His best friend Albert said that "Since he was a boy, he never had no pity for nobody. But he never had no pity for himself either", which means he doesn't make excuses, and doesn't expect others to make excuses either. In the past, Marie was a prostitute, but quit when she became married to Harry. Marie is deeply in love with Harry, and would do anything to ensure his happiness or safety. She has bright blonde hair, and is still good-looking in her mid-forties. Marie is the mother of Harry's children, and stays home with them every day while Harry runs his fishing charter. Although she gained a lot of weight, she is still beautiful in Harry's eyes. She is extremely dependent on Harry and his income, because she is too old and too big to become a prostitute again.
