Literary Analysis Essay To kill a mockingbird is a story that tells us about the past. It shows us the way people were treated and how they grew up. At the same time, Harper Lee was able to use rhetorical devices and motifs to capture the audience and define the past. In to kill a mockingbird, Harper Lee uses pathos, ethos and motifs skillfully, and paints a detailed picture of growing up without prejudice in a small Southern town during the depression. In the book to kill a mockingbird, Harper Lee strongly uses motifs showing how Jem and Scout learns while growing up how to be less bias as they live in a small southern town during the depression. Meanwhile, many people had a preconceived notion about others in their community, However, Jem and Scout are taught throughout the book why they should not be judging others and being prejudiced or biased towards them. For example in the book To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus advises Scout that ”You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”(39) Atticus shows Scout through this quote that people may have bad days and other people can not understand them, if they have not had the same experience. The elements pathos, ethos and motifs each strongly supported growing up without being bias or prejudice. Pathos appealed to the readers connecting with them and showing emotion. Logos gave the readers logical reasoning and last but not least is motifs they were used strongly to support growing up in a small town. We realize throughout this book that we all need to be open minded and less judgmental towards others because we may never know what the are or have gone
