In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird the black community is looked down upon and is not treated in a fair way. Harper Lee has portrayed the black community positively. The time when the novel is based they show intense racism and inequality. Evidence is shown when the Tom Robinson trial is commenced and Calpurnia’s employment status.

The blacks have to use a separate church and in the courtroom there is an area for black people only. There are lots of racist names made such as "nigger" and "sulky darkies". The black community are always being abused by the whites. A good example of the black being looked down upon is when Aunt Alexandra wants Calpurnia to be sacked because she is black even though she is loved like a mother from the children. It is also very clear that a fair trial isn’t possible for a black man as was shown in the Tom Robinsons trial. Mr.
Gilmer, Bob and Mayella Ewell are all racist towards him, with only Atticus fighting for him.

To kill a Mockingbird showed the racism of the black community. The black are always respectful to the white people even though they are accused and abused by them. The novel really points out the racism back in the century the book was based. Children like scout are one of the only fair people as they don’t understand what is actually happening. In conclusion, the black community come out as being the good people as it has come to our realisation that the white treat the black as they are nothing. The racism of the people of Maycomb is shown badly, and clearly shows who the good and the bad are. The points are realistic as this could have been the way of the black community back in the century it was set.
